Hi friends! I’m Alyssa from Hark Quilts. I am obsessed with this collection, Floret, designed by Gerri Robinson of Planted Seed Designs. The dainty flowers and leaves look so beautiful in EVERY single color. It was so hard to choose a small bunch to make a baby quilt.
I used the following fabrics (listed from top to bottom in the photo above):
- 1/4 yd – Floret Cadet (C675-CADET)
- 1/4 yd – Floret Stone (C6765-STONE)
- 1/4 yd – Floret Frost (C675-FROST)
- 1/4 yd – Floret Nutmeg (C675-NUTMEG)
- 1/4 yd – Floret Beach (C675-BEACH)
- 1 3/4 yd – Floret Ash (C675-ASH)
- 1/4 yd – Floret Cream (C675-CREAM)
I was excited to try some earthy tones for this baby quilt. My go-to colors are usually bright, warm, and very saturated colors. So I tried to test myself this time around by picking cool tones and neutrals. I googled peaceful ocean scenes and searched Pinterest for soothing neutral palettes, trying to get a grasp of how to use tans and blues together. Maybe it’s silly–I just don’t feel like I know how to use these colors well.
Once the fabrics arrived I was so thrilled! They matched the images on the storyboard perfectly. That’s one thing that I LOVE about Riley Blake, I’m never surprised when the fabrics show up because they always match the images on their site. Just perfection! I can’t wait to find more of the Nutmeg color to use in future projects, it is soooo pretty and is easily my favorite of the group. Check out the rest of the Floret collection here.
I knew I wanted the quilt to have some sort of gradient lineup from cream to tan to blue to dark blue, but I didn’t just want to sew even-sized stripes together. From each 1/4 yard of fabric I cut two 3″ strips x WOF and two 1.5″ strips x WOF (WOF = width of fabric).
I designated a 1.5″ strip of Cream as the center of the quilt and then started to work out from there, continuing the gradient with each stripe. My gradient from light to dark is; Cream – Ash – Beach – Nutmeg – Frost – Stone – Cadet. I alternated thin and thick strips to create variety visually.
Final dimensions will be 42×42″, and I think I’ve decided to use a real fluffy batting with this one. I’m envisioning a puffy coat look with a thicker batting and horizontal quilting that lines up with the seams.
