Lost at Sea – Star Attraction Quilt

Hello friends! It’s Julia from Bayhill Studio, and today I’m thrilled to be sharing a nautical version of my Star Attraction quilt pattern featuring fabric from the Lost at Sea collection designed by the talented Natàlia Juan Abelló.

The Star Attraction quilt is a simple design the utilizes color placement to create the fun stripe and arrow background design, while keeping the sawtooth star as the main focal point.

I opted for a monochromatic look, using just four fabrics in shades of blue and white. The whale prints are so adorable, with little schools of fish, coral, and of course – whales. And look at those tiny sailboats! Seriously too cute!

I love how the Sky Wave print is a unifying theme throughout the quilt. The soothing shade of light blue adds a calming feel to the overall design.

I quilted this on my home machine using a simple wavy line motif.

I will admit that each time I quilt wavy lines, I get nervous. My natural tendency is to want the lines to line up perfectly, while at the same time, my brain is wanting more organic, alternating waves.

To combat this, and force myself to let the process be more organic and free flowing, I stitch one wavy line along one horizontal seam. Next, I stitch another wavy line along the next seam, not looking at the first line. This way, the waves are bound to be a little different from each other. I then start sewing wavy lines between the two — filling in the space until they are anywhere from 1/4″ to 1″ apart. I continue this process throughout the quilt, and end up with a design that is full of life and movement.

For the binding, I used the Azure Waves print. The clean, tonal look of this print perfectly frames the quilt.

The quilt back is Denim Gunnysack — part of Riley Blake Designs basics. I LOVE the simple texture of this print and how well it works with the overall coastal vibe of the quilt!
