Marissa here from Rae Gun Ramblings. I have two super easy accessories for you today that are perfect for adding a pop of color to an outfit.
I could live in knit dresses luckily they are super easy to make. But sometimes I think they need a little something extra so today I’m sharing a basic tutorial for a sash that can be swapped out and used on many different dresses. And for the little ones I’ve got a quick handkerchief scarf that has quickly become a staple in my house!
Handkerchief Scarf Tutorial
Just like a sash can be made and worn with a number of different dresses, this little handkerchief scarf can be used to dress up a basic tee for your little one. You can see the full written handkerchief scarf tutorial on my blog or just watch the video below.
I LOVE how easy it is to put this together and it’s great for toddlers because it stays in place and goes on quickly which makes keeping them cozy even easier.
For myself I whipped up these two Lady Skater dresses in just a few hours. The long sleeve one is made with the Four Corners Triangle knit. It’s hard to tell in these pictures but there are little clusters of yellow triangles thrown in the white which I just love. The short sleeve one is made with the Feathers Navy knit from the By Popular Demand line.
I love the dresses as is but I think it would be fun to make a sash. Sashes are super easy to make and a fun way to add a pop of color or just a little contrast.
Sash Tutorial
What You need
- 1/2 yard fabric (I used
What to Do
- Cut the fabric into 3 strips 5″ by 44″
- Take one of the strips and cut it down to the length of you (or whoever will be using the sash) front waist. So from one side to the other just going across the front.
- With right sides together sew the other 2 strips to each end of the cut down piece. You should now have a long skinny strip of fabric.
- Fold in half with right sides together. Starting at the corner with the fold sew a diagonal line to the raw edges of the fabric and then sew down the length of the sash catching both pieces of fabric. Leave the other end open.
- Turn your fabric right side. This is my favorite way to turn long tubes of fabric. Iron down.
- Tuck the open end of fabric under to form an angle and sew down.
- Tie your sash on and you’re ready to go.
This sizing works great for women but you can use it for kids too. Depending on the style of dress that it will be worn with and the age of the kiddo you may end up wanting the sash to be shorter but that’s easy enough to just trim and change.
