When we saw the new Zootropolis pattern book by Sassafras Lane, we knew we had to get our hands on it! The applique blocks are absolutely adorable and can be made into a fun quilt or into individual pillows.
I decided to make the Tina the Toucan block using 4th of July inspired colors.
I selected my prints from a wide variety of Riley Blake Basics which can be mixed and matched in a million + one fun combinations!
I used the 1/4″ Red Stripe for the beak, Steel Kisses for the body, small Gray Gingham for the wing, White-on-White Daisy for the face, Confetti Cotton in Nutmeg for the branch, Small Red Gingham for the churn dash border, Confetti Cotton in Steel for the outside border, and Denim Blossom for the background.
The applique is fused on with double-sided fusible adhesive, which makes this a super quick and easy project. I used a basic zig-zag stitch around the edges, but the book offers several different options for you to think about.
I love how the Denim Blossom background fabric looks like a starry night sky!
The block can easily be sewn up into a 14″ pillow or added to other blocks to make a quilt, or even used to make a mini quilt, table runner, bag, placemat….the options are endless!
