Today we have exciting news to share… the #RBDblockchallenge is coming back in January!!
This annual challenge has grown into one of our favorite things of the year and we are thrilled to embark on another challenge quilt with you. If this is the first time you’re hearing of the RBD Block Challenge, welcome! We are happy to have you! You can find the free patterns and quilt instructions for the years prior HERE.
For our challenge quilt this year we are sewing with our brand new Expressions Batiks! We also have fabric requirements to make a version in Confetti Cottons. Both versions are so lovely!
So, when does all the fun begin? We are kicking off with our first block pattern on January 3rd! Find the complete schedule for each block release below.
FAQ’s
Q: Where will I find the block patterns when they are released?
A: We try to make sure our patterns are released in multiple places and accessible to everyone! We will be releasing the patterns on the scheduled days at 10 am Mountain Time. The patterns will be shared in the following locations:
- In the #RBDBlockChallenge Facebook Group
- Here on the RBD Blog
- On RBD social channels (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram)
- On our website for download
We will also share patterns and information in our Newsletter so be sure to sign up for that!
Q: Where do I go to share my progress and blocks as I sew?
A: We have an awesome, private Facebook Group community all about the challenge! Join Here. We keep the group private to keep spam accounts at bay. If you are not on Facebook, you can share your blocks to Instagram with #RBDblockchallenge!
Q: Do I have to use Riley Blake fabrics to participate?
A: No! You are welcome to use any fabrics you like. You are welcome to sew along and join the Facebook Group no matter what fabrics you choose!
Q: Can I purchase a quilt kit?
A: Yes! At the end of this post we are listing some shops who are offering kits.
Q: I am new to quilting. Is this challenge for me?
A: YES! This is a fun way to try your hand at new quilt blocks. However, we call it a challenge because a few of the patterns included are just that, a challenge! If you are a brand new quilter and find you are not having success with a challenging pattern, you can always switch it out for a beginner friendly block from a prior year. We recommend this block, this block, or this block as great options.
Q: I don’t know how to pick fabrics without seeing the final quilt… can I peek?
A: Alright… we hear you. While we will be keeping the final quilt layout a secret (meaning not posting it publicly until the end), we are sharing a spoiler for everyone who wants to see it early. You’ve been warned! You can CLICK HERE to see the final quilt layout. But hey, don’t spoil the fun for everyone who wants to keep it a surprise! Please don’t share the final quilt layout on social media or in the FB group.
Q: I don’t see a requirement for backing?
A: If you follow our layout you will need at least 3 1/2 yards of backing material.
Quilt Kits
If we hear about a shop that has kits available, we will list them here! If you are a shop owner and want to be on this list please comment on this blog post or shoot us an email at blog@rileyblakedesigns.com.
We can hardly wait to kick off another year with the #RBDblockchallenge! While you wait for January 3rd be sure to pick out your fabric, join the FB group, and make sure you have all your tools and notions ready to go! We’ll see you soon.
PS – keep an eye on @cindycloward on Instagram for an early preview of Block 1!
