Blue Jean – Grandmother’s Groovy Garden Baby Quilt

Hello, friends, it’s Julia from Bayhill Studio, and today I have the most adorable baby quilt to share with you featuring fabric from the Blue Jean collection designed by Christopher Thompson.

This is a baby size version of my original Grandmother’s Groovy Garden Quilt, and I’m LOVING it! For this version I opted to go with raw edge appliqué around the flower edges. The edges fray a bit after they are washed, which I think really enhanced the faded denim look of this quilt.

This quilt is made using the large size of my Groovy Flower Template. The template comes in three sizes, however you can increase or decrease the size when you print it out, making it completely customizable.

I paired the Blue Jean fabrics with fabrics from Christopher Thompson’s Chambray line. They look perfect together!

Blue Jean features a variety of prints in a faded black, shades of blue, grey, and white. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I think mine is the Ditzy flowers print.

The layering of the flowers is basically a quilt-as-you-go method of assembling a quilt top. The wonderful part about this particular design is that if you missed a spot, or if later the fabric gets damaged or needs patching in any way, all you have to do is sew another flower over the damaged area, run it through the wash, and no one will ever know the difference.

Here is a look at how the flowers looked before washing. I absolutely love how these colors and designs play together!

And here is the quilt after being washed. The lovely frayed edges create a soft, sensory experience, and will be so much fun for little ones to run their fingers over.

For the quilt binding, I used the light and dark blue Chambray. This was out of necessity – I was low on fabric – but I think the two-toned binding is perfect!
