We are crazy for crazy quilts and Lori Holt’s Crazy Quilt Paper makes crazy quilt making fun and easy!
I am calling this a Prismatic Crazy Quilt because of all of those fractal rainbow colors remind me of the colors that prisms make when the light filters through them.
The quilt top, measuring approximately 57″ x 57″ is entirely made up of Riley Blake Confetti Cotton solids.
The quilt is made up of 7 rows of 7 blocks – for a total of 49 blocks.
I added a 3″ Riley White Confetti Cotton border to frame the quilt and used Riley Navy for the binding.
I used Lori Holt’s 10″ Crazy Quilt Paper to create this throw size quilt. You could also use the 5″ Crazy Quilt Paper to make an adorable baby quilt.
The quilt is made up of seven different blocks — each represents a different color. I will show you how to make the blue blocks, but the instructions are exactly the same for the red, orange, yellow, green, pink, and purple blocks.
Begin with seven shades of blue (or whatever color you are working with). 10″ square pre-cuts work great. If you are using yardage like I am, cut them just a little larger than 10″ square. Layer them into one stack.
On the top of the stack of fabrics, lay one sheet of Crazy Quilt Paper and press, printed side facing up. When pressed, the paper will stick to the top piece of fabric. Don’t worry, it will easily peel off later.
Trim the extra fabric so you have a perfect 10″ square.
Cutting instructions are printed on the paper. Cut through all of the layers, following the cutting order on the paper. After you have cut them, you’ll have 5 different sections.
I like to start laying out my sections beginning with the top left hand corner. I know it says “2” on it, but that’s just my preference. It really doesn’t matter which section you start with. Lay out the first sections, leaving space to assemble seven different blocks.
Once the first little sections are laid out, begin laying out the second section BUT begin by shifting to the right of the first block. My starting piece is always the Mint color.
You can see where I circled in red, I am laying out the Mint piece of the next section (#3) starting at the Teal piece.
Continue laying out the sections, each time shifting one block over. Here you can see that for my third section, I started just to the left of my previous block.
The fourth section is arranged in the same way.
And finally the fifth. That’s it! Once you have your blocks laid out, sew them together in the order they are numbered on the paper. Press and trim off uneven edges as you go. Trim the finished block to 8.5″ square.
Repeat for each color.
To lay out the quilt, start with the top row, arranging the blocks in the color order you would like. I started with blue and ended with purple.
The second color from the left will always be the starting color for the next row. In the top row, the second color is green, so green is the starting color in the next row.
Arrange all of the blocks in this manner.
Add your 3″ Riley White border strips, and it’s done!
I quilted this with an all over stipple design. Fast and easy!
The quilt is backed with Black and White Blossom Wide Back fabric — one of our favorite go-to basics designed by Christopher Thompson.
This quilt is so much fun to look at! Whether it is scrunched up, folded, twisted…..any way you look at it, it’s pure eye candy!
