In case you missed our big announcement, Riley Blake Designs has released our first ever collections of Batiks! We are so excited about Expressions Batiks but we know that many of you may not be familiar with what Batiks are all about.
Today we want to share a mini lesson about what Batik means and why the fabrics are different from regular quilting cotton.
Historically, Batik is the most expressive and subtle of the resist methods of dying fabric. The art of Batik has been practiced for centuries; it is simply defined as the art of decorating cloth by using wax and dye.
Batik is a crafted fabric that undergoes the delicate and repeated process of dying, waxing, dyeing and boiling. The word batik originates from the Javanese word tik (pro. teek) and means “to dot”.
This process of design creates absolutely stunning fabrics that are completely unique. It is amazing to think about how each fabric is handmade and all of the different people who are involved in the creation of these beautiful fabrics.
