Hi friends! I am Alyssa from Hark Quilts. I’m so excited to share this quick & easy baby quilt tutorial with you. It may be the fastest baby quilt EVER and turns out oh so cute!! I’m obsessed with each and every floral print and the simple off-white grid (list of fabrics at end of post) is one of my favorite fabrics ever now. It’s so simple and lovely and I wish I had 90 yards of it!
I mean just look at those fabrics!! I’ve been on the hunt for ages to find florals that I think my boys would like in a quilt. This collection is soooo dreamy and so perfect. There are many different types of florals and yet they all go together flawlessly. My toddler’s favorite color is currently purple and so when I saw these purple daisies I was thrilled!
My usual sources of inspiration for quilts tend to come from nature, tiles, and architecture. However, this time my inspiration came from food–an ice cream sandwich. That may seem bizarre but I hadn’t eaten one in forever and my husband had brought some home while shopping with our toddler and what can I say, they are as delicious as they are inspiring haha!
Fabric Requirements
- 8 fabrics – 1/4 yard each
- 44″x54″ batting (this measurement provides 1″ extra on all sides*)
- 1 1/2 yard backing
- 1/2 yard binding
Final dimensions are 42″x52″.
Tutorial
1. This quilt is assembled by having thick stripes sandwiched between two skinny stripes, like an ice cream sandwich. Choose four fabrics for the thick stripes and cut two 4″ stripes from those four fabrics.
2. Cut four 2″ stripes from the remaining four fabrics.
3. Pair fabrics together and sew. I chose to have a repeating pattern (see below), but you can get creative and mix and match as you like.
4. Press seams open or to the side.
5. Baste, quilt, and bind. If you’re wanting rounded corners (see below), use your favorite mixing bowl as a guide and bind like normal. Just sew a little slower as you go around the curves, being careful to not pull your binding. Cutting your binding on the bias so it is extra stretchy will also help the curved edges come out real clean.
6. Wash, cuddle, and enjoy your new ice cream sandwich-inspired baby quilt with your sweet baby or toddler.
