Hello! It’s Maggie from Smashed Peas and Carrots again! I am so excited to be here today to show you how to make a crazy quick project…a lanyard!!! My kids wear IDs at their school and they wanted a lanyard to hang it around their neck as opposed to clipping the ID to their clothes…well, momma to the rescue! I figured why buy them when I could make them exactly in the colors and style they wanted. 🙂 These would be great to make as a Teacher Gift too, or how about that momma you know with her hands full of carseats and children? A lanyard is a great place to clip your keys for easy access!
To make these lanyards, I used the beautiful Vintage Daydream from Riley Blake. For each lanyard you will need 1 strip of fabric measuring 42 inches long. The width will depend on your swivel clip. Whatever size clip you chose you will need your fabric to be 4 x that number minus 1/4 inch. So for me, I used a .75″ swivel clip so my fabric strip width was .75″ x 4 = 3″- .25″= 2.75″ wide. You will also need some fray check.
The first thing we need to do is fold our fabric in half, lengthwise, and iron the length of it…all the way down.
Then open the fabric up and fold each side in toward the seam you just pressed with the iron.
Next, fold the fabric back along that first seam we pressed and iron it one more time. We are essentially hiding those frayed edges in the center!
Now, time to grab our sewing machines! Sew along each lengthwise edge using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Once you are done sewing, grab some fray check and dab the raw edges with it and let it dry for a few minutes.
Then, take your swivel clip and pull both ends of the fabric through the metal loop. Fold the fabric in like in the picture above.
Now we are going to sew a box stitch into the folded fabric to keep it in place nice and tight.
And there you have it, a cute lanyard or two done in no time at all!!
