Hello, I’m Alyssa from Hark Quilts! I’m very excited to share with you this bright and summery quilt. I took a classic design–the log cabin–and turned it a bit more simple and modern by making the strips extra chunky. You might remember another blog post from earlier this year where I made a similar quilt with the stunning Little Women fabric. This time, I started off with a fun citrus print from Hobby Lobby (list of fabrics at end of post). I’ve been hoarding it for a while and knew that the Riley Blake basics would match perfectly. Did you know that they’ve got 164 solids?! These Confetti Cottons solids are super soft and come in so many different colors and gorgeous shades. Let me give you one idea of what to make with their solids–this chunky log cabin quilt! Grab your favorite print and match it Riley Blake Basics. I like to browse through their website so I know exactly what to look for at my favorite fabric shops. My favorite basics collections are the ones you see here in this stack of fabrics:
I went through RBD’s basics on the website, picking out colors that seemed to match my fabric. I then took screenshots of these basics and put them all in a doc. I took a photo of my fabric, put it in the doc also, and then compared it to the basics I’d picked out. I had to hope that they’d match once I got them all together in person, and they did!
I cut chunky strips and got to work on making log cabin blocks. Sew, trim, press, repeat!

Assembling each block is a breeze–the wide, chunky strips are easy to work with and do not stretch as easy as thinner strips. I chose to press the seams open but next time I think I’ll save even more time by pressing to the side. Because the strips are so wide, the bulk of the side-pressed seams won’t be a concern.
The joy of using chunky strips to create the log cabin is that the blocks end up a whopping 18 inches wide and tall! It makes for a super fast assembly once the blocks are done, since all that is needed is to sew 16 blocks together.
I positioned the cool and warm-colored strips in a way that they’d make a diagonal striped pattern together once all the blocks were sewn together.
