Hi y’all, it’s Kari from That’s-Sew-Kari! There’s something refreshing about sewing for warmer weather when you’re still riding out the final days of winter. We’ve been blessed with a few surprise days of 75-degree days and the excitement is noticeable. I love making the transition from needing to add sleeves on everything to sewing up strappy, sleeveless dresses that will become a necessity next month.
When I saw Jill Finley’s “On the Wind” Collection and the story behind it, I knew I needed to make a new dress to celebrate the joy of Spring. I had a hard time narrowing down my selection because the kites and pinwheels are so fun! However, I kept coming back to the Dandelion floral prints. I knew it was perfect for my 11-year old daughter.
I selected: On The Wind Dandelions Sky, On The Wind Windy Blush, and On The Wind Geometric Clover.
After I received the fabrics in the mail, I envisioned a tiered sundress. As I looked through my patterns, I kept coming back to Carmelo by Little Lizard King. I love the full, tiered skirt, oversized pockets, feminine sweetheart neckline and the unique show-stopping back.
The back is the perfect place to add a coordinating fabric and I loved how the dandelions popped against the geometric clover print. The scallops are my most favorite part — it’s important not to rush through this part of the dress. I like to draw on my seam allowance so I can sew directly on the line to maintain the shape of the scallops. I also used my Riley Blake Misting Spray Bottle and Quilter’s Clapper to make sure they were perfectly pressed.
