Hi there sewing friends! It’s Stef here today, from Girl. Inspired. I’m excited to finally show you this darling girl’s dress I stitched up with one of my favorite Riley Blake novelty prints, Smarty Cats. This is a basic dress with gathered skirt, buttoned bodice, and cap sleeves. My daughter absolutely adores this darling fabric and I had so much fun pairing Smarty Cats with a couple other basic Riley Blake cottons to create a fun, whimsical garment.
Aren’t the quirky little cats and fish the BEST? What I love about this fabric is that it looks modern and artsy even though it’s covered in cats.
These orange and white polka dot buttons (also Riley Blake) work perfectly with the fabric to complete the back closure.
I added nice deep pockets in the side seams for my little one to collect all kinds of treasures. This girl LOVES pockets! I also put a cute contrasting pocket up on the bodice – it gives the dress a little more personality and gave me a chance to add yet another polka dot print.
Our photo shoot turned into one of my favorite moments with this cutie pie. She was really into the modeling and was giving me all kinds of sassy poses and pouty lips, but when I told her to be sure to stay super serious and not crack a single smile – that’s when I really got my favorite snapshots. I just love creating something adorable to suit my daughters’ personalities and then watch them come alive dancing around in their new clothes. If you have a kitty cat lover in your life, you really should try this fabric – it’s the cutest! This dress pattern will be available soon from Girl.
