Hi Everyone! Its Katie from ChooChoo Skadoo. I am so excited to share with you my Strawberry Trails quilt made with The Shabby Strawberry. Today we are going to be talking about binding. I view binding as the icing on the cake and who doesn’t love to eat a spoonful of frosting?
I love to use bias binding; I use it on 98% of my quilts. And today I am going to show you an easy way to fold your fabric to get your binding right on the bias. Lay your fabric on your cutting board with the fold by you and the selvage at the top.
Open your fabric all the way. Refold it on the diagonal creating a 90 degree angle across from the fold. (see picture below)
Fold in half so the folds are touching. (see pic below)
Move your fabric so all your folds line up with the lines on your mat.
Fold your fabric into thirds. Fold the bottom up a third and then fold the top down.
Trim the side folds off. I cut off a 1/4″ or less. Cut into binding strips.
I cut my strips to 2 1/4″. Cut all the way to the end. Sew your strips end to end.
Fold in half and press flat. Attach to your quilt using a 1/4″ seam. Finish it up using your favorite technique and you are done.
I prefer bias binding because I feel it lays easier on your quilt as your hand tack it down. I also LOVE striped bindings and they look AMAZING on the bias.
