It’s less than two weeks until Christmas, so I am in full-on Christmas crafting mood over at @verityvintagestudio! Of course for my December project with Chunky Thread I wanted to stitch something holiday-ish.
I love my vintage ornaments, so when I came across this free pattern for a vintage/retro style ornament garland by www.homemadeheather.com, I had to try it. So I picked out a retro Christmas palette and started right in.
The sample size skeins are adorable, and perfect for small mix-and-match projects like this, but you can use regular size skeins, or even leftover yarn since they use small amounts.
For mine I used the colors Frosting, Honey, Denim, Lipstick, Vivid, Brick, and Sweet Mint. It would also be very cute if you used a more traditional red, white, and green palette.
There are three different styles of ornaments. They are quite addicting to make, and are pretty quick, too. You can make the whole garland in just a few hours.
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, so my ornaments turned out a little smaller, but that’s just fine! I actually think this weight of cotton yarn gives a nicer finish and more structure.
You definitely want to block them well when you are done.
You can assemble a garland by threading yarn on a needle and taking a stitch through the top of each decoration. I chose to actually crochet a chain, and single crochet through the top of each ornament. These have 15 chain stitches between each one; and I also added a hanging loop at each end.
The little finishing starburst embroidery sends the cuteness factor way up. Each ornament is a different color combo, so no two are exactly alike. These would be perfect to make individually as single ornaments too.
I’m definitely enjoying my new garland, and hope this inspires you to do some holiday crocheting this year!
