Instructor: Katie Ellis
I am so excited to be here and share a fun project with you all. My name is Katie and I create over at ChooChoo Skadoo.
I am going to share with you all how to make this adorable quilt using the Military Max collection. This is a good size quilt; 74″x94″. Perfect for any boys bed.
Supplies:
12 Fat quarters
3 yards sashing
1.5 yards borders
3/4 yards binding
6 yards backing
Split your fat quarters into 3 piles with 4 fat quarters in each pile. Each pile will be for one block of fabric.
We will be making 3 different blocks; 4 of each.
Block one cutting instructions:
From each fat quarter cut out:
A- 6.5″x8.5″
B- 6.5″x8.5″
C- 4.5″x18.5″
D- 4.5″x4.5″
E- 4.5″x6.5″
F- 4.5″4.5″
From the sashing cut: cut 4 of each
G- 2.5″x6.5″
H- 2.5″x4.5″
I- 2.5″x4.5″
J- 2.5″x18.5″
K- 2.5″x18.5″
Once you have them all cut out lay them out alternating fabrics until your block looks how you want it to.
Start by sewing the fabric into rows. I did the middle section first and then the outside rows.
Once they are sewn together press them flat. Then sew the rows into your block.
Repeat to make 4 blocks. Each block should mease 18.5″x18.5″.

Layout your block mixing up your fabrics how you like them. Sew them together into rows like the first block. Make 4 blocks. They should measure 18.5″ square.
Lay out all your blocks with 3 across and 4 down. I started by going down 1 then 2 below, then 3 below then 1. Starting back at the top with block w and repeating.
From your sashing cut 8 strips at 2.5″x18.5″. Lay a strip between all your blocks then sew them into rows. You should end up with 4 rows.
Cut from your sashing 4 strips 2.5″ x WOF and sew end to end. From that cut 3 strips to 58.5″ sew your rows together with these strips in between your rows. Press flat.
Cut 7 more strips from your sashing 2.5″xWOF. Sew on both of the long sides and press flat. And then sew along the top and bottom. Press flat.
Cut 8 strips from your border fabric to 6.5″xWOF and sew end to end. Sew them on the same as the sashing above. Long sides first and then the top and bottoms. Press flat.
Quilt it however you choose. I did stars in a varigated green.
I used the same fabric for my binding as my border. I prefer to do bias binding and I have a great tutorial on how to make it over on my site.
Thanks for letting me share this quilt with you. I hope you visit me soon at ChooChoo Skadoo!
