TBT Modern: Jacob’s Ladder

It’s time for another TBT Modern #tbt! I am having a blast sewing along with Bonnie’s Traditional Block Thursday tutorials. Today I am showing off my modern version of Bonnie’s Jacob’s Ladder tutorial.

If you have been following along with me, you know this is my first go at quilting. Up until now, I have always sewn clothing. Bonnie’s tutorials have progressively been getting a little more challenging each week, so I must confess, at first glance, I was a little nervous about trying this one.

I can tell you I had nothing to be nervous about. These blocks are just a combination of 4-patch and half-square triangles – I can do that!

For my first version of this block, I decided to use 3 colors: Riley Blake’s Rouge, Gray and Clean White. Bonnie’s tutorial features just two different fabrics, however, because I was working with solids, I thought three colors would add more  visual interest.

For my second block, I wanted to try out the scrappy version. It takes a little more patience, because for this look, you really can’t do the quick strip piecing method where you cut 10 little segments out of one long strip.

Instead, I took several 2 1/2″ x 5″ strips, mixed and matched the colors, sewed them together, then cut each into two 2 1/2″ segments.

Colors used: Riley Blake’s Lime, True Black, Beehive, Pepper, Ocean Blue, & Sugar Pink.

I seriously love both versions! I have a new appreciation for quilters. How they stay focused on one design long enough to finish an entire quilt, I’ll never know. Once I finish a block, I want to try a new one, with new colors and patterns. This is too much fun!
