Much loved by quilters everywhere, shirtings are a simple small pattern on a white or off white ground. These basic prints are used in quilting as an accent or neutral piece when partnered with darker prints. You will find shirtings in almost all antique quilts and reproduction quilting projects.
During the 19th Century patch working became popular because it was practical. Clothing and other inexpensive material were available and readily recycled into quilts. The original shirtings used in quilting were taken from men’s shirts and later taken from women’s blouses and dresses.
