Hello Quilting Friends! It’s Melissa Corry from Happy Quilting here, with you today. I was absolutely thrilled when Riley Blake announced they were releasing their new line of Expressions Batiks!!! I have really not sewn with Batiks, but it has been on my list to start creating with them. They just have so much beautiful and vibrant colors and I just love the look of a finished batik quilt!!! So with the help of my good friends at Riley Blake Designs, I jumped into the Batik Goodness!!! And now, Today I am thrilled to be sharing one of my newest quilt finishes with you that feature the gorgeous new Expressions Batiks. This is my Treasured quilt from my new Fast & Fun Lap Quilts book, that released last month, and it is certainly a treasure for my first Batik Quilt!!!
The thing I love most about the new Expressions Batiks is that Riley Blake has made them in Pre-cuts!!! I am such a huge fan of pre-cuts and I love that someone with an amazing eye for color has mixed and matched over 20 Expressions Batiks Bundles. I choose to use the Expressions Batiks Meadow and all the quilts in my Fast & Fun Lap Quilts book are made from one 10″ Square Stacker so one Expressions Batiks Meadow 10″ Stacker with some beautiful Pale Pink hand dyed batik for the background and you have a gorgeous Treasured Quilt!!!
I just love how the assortment of colors in this grouping really allowed me to frame each block and make it its own. It is just so fun to me to see what parts of the block pop out based on the colors used. And of course, I just love, love, love the scrappy binding to finish it all off.
Treasured might look a little tricky, but truly, it is made with just some simple stitch and flip units. And the fun part is, I show you how to press all of those angled seams so that they all nest. Nested angled seams are my absolute favorite, they just make such perfect points every time!! Treasured finishes at 52 1/2″ x 68 1/2″ so it truly is the perfect lap size quilt to snuggle up in 🙂
And when it came time to quilt mine, I wanted to keep it super snuggly, so I did a loose curly q design over the entire quilt. These are so much fun to quilt, and because it isn’t super dense, it stays nice and soft. And I just love how all the curves in the quilting add so much movement to all the crisp angles of the piecing.
And of course, it also adds some amazing texture!!! And with those gorgeous colors and prints in the Expressions Batiks , you know that is just what I am going to do. I am just so excited to have made my first Batik quilt, and you know I have lots more planned already!!!
Oh, And just for fun, here is the original version of Treasured Quilt from my Fast & Fun Lap Quilts Book This quilt features Sonnet Dusk by Corri Sheff for Riley Blake Designs. Isn’t it just amazing how much you can change the look of a quilt by just changing the fabrics. One happy and bright and one rich and beautiful. And both just so pretty!!!
