Hi Riley Blake readers! I’m Melissa from Sew Like My Mom and I’m excited to be sharing this great free pattern with you all today!
Whoever coined the phrase “necessity is the mother of invention” was clearly a mother in need of something for her kids! My girls are all playing soccer this year and I suddenly have to provide practice uniforms for them. My girls. The ones who are never NOT in a dress! What’s a Mama to do? Make some awesome shorts, of course!
And the girls won’t stop wearing them. They’re fully obsessed and are requesting multiple pairs to wear to bed, to school, to the grocery store, you name it!
I love yoga waistbands on bottoms, but it usually requires fabric with some sort of lycra to retain the shape and stay in place. I was able to create the same thing with just the amazing Riley Blake knits, no lycra or spandex needed! I need to make some for myself next!
They really are as comfy as they look. These knits are a dream to sew on and they wash and wear amazingly well, too.
And because they’re so awesome and comfortable, I’m giving you all the pattern for free!! Just like most of my patterns, it’s available in sizes 12m-8! CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE PATTERN Ready to get sewing?! Let’s go! Gather your pieces. You should have a left and right leg and one waistband cut on the fold.
Place the right and left pieces wrong sides together and measure down 1†on one side and cut off at an angle. This will create a higher back rise for the shorties.
Place the left and right pieces right sides together and sew the back and front rises. Serge or zigzag the edges to finish.
Open the shorties and place the front and back inseam together and sew. Serge or zigzag the edges to finish.
Fold the bottom of the shorties up and pin in place to hem. 12m-4 – fold up 1/2†5-8 – fold up 1â€
Turn shorties right sides out and hem the bottom of the legs.
Take your waistband piece, fold it in half with right sides together and sew at 1/4†seam allowance.
Fold the waistband in half with wrong sides together, matching raw edges. Place pins in the 4 corners.
Place pins at the front and back seam, and on both sides of the shorties.
Place the waistband on the shorties, matching the raw edges with the top of the shorties. Match pins and pin the waistband to the shorties.
Sew the waistband to the shorties at a 1/2” seam allowance. Serge or zigzag the edge to finish.
And that’s it! Enjoy your shorties!! As always, thanks so much for having me, Riley Blake!!
