Hello, friends! It’s Julia from Bayhill Studio and I have a seriously adorable project to share with you today!
You know I love fabric panels, and I couldn’t resist the chance to play with this fun flannel panel from the Blast Off collection designed by Shawn Wallace.
This collection of dreamy soft flannels features the cutest ever kids in space, rocket ships, stripes, stars, and more!
I opted to make a nice sized toddler quilt measuring approximately 46″ x 51″ – perfect for cuddling up to while reading a favorite story book.
Of course, a space themed fabric panel needed a space themed border, so I whipped up a stack of inset circles in various sizes to create this fun – and easy – planetary border.
I created a video tutorial showing how easy it is to make inset circles, and how I put them together to create this specific quilt border.
I added 1 1/2″ strips of the multi stripe to create a nice little 1″ (finished) border. I repeated the same multi fabric for the binding, which nicely ties it all together.
I have found that when quilting with flannel, the quilting design needs to be spaced further apart than with cotton in order to prevent bunching and pinching of the fabric. I quilted this on my home machine using a large scale meandering design with little stars added randomly as I stitched. The stars are a fun touch and echo the space theme perfectly.
Easy to make and oh, so cute! Visit my BLOG for additional photos and details.
