Bluebonnet Breeze – Westport Dress

Hello! I’m Kari from That’s-Sew-Kari. My youngest daughter loves birds and butterflies and really all things nature related. I knew when I saw Bluebonnet Breeze Collection by Shealeen Louise that she would love it! It features bluebonnet flowers (Texas state flower) as well as other florals, butterflies and birds. It’s a stunning color palette of sky, black, white and cobalt with a sprinkling of other floral colors.

I let my daughter choose her fabric. I really thought she’d choose the Bluebonnet Breeze Monarch in Sky, but she really loved the birds flying with the butterflies in Bluebonnet Breeze Main in Sky. I also grabbed Bluebonnet Breeze Tonal in blue for lining.

When we initially selected the fabric, I had chosen a pattern I hadn’t sewn in a while. Sadly just before the fabric arrived, the pattern retired. Because I was back to the drawing board, I let my daughter choose her pattern. She chose the Westport Dress from Little Lizard King. She loves the classic collar mixed with the flutter sleeves. She also likes that the front buttons means she doesn’t need any help when getting dressed.

The images on the fabric just pop again the sky colored background. The detailing of the birds and butterflies makes them seem real.

Of course, we had to add the pockets! Is a dress really complete if it doesn’t have pockets? I aways French seam my pockets/side seams because serging around the pockets is my least favorite thing. What’s your favorite way to finish pockets?

I also love the hem detailing. It features a curved hemline that mimics a collared shirt. The quality of the fabric made it really easy to iron the hemline in place. It’s a 1/4″ double folded hemline and I was able to keep it perfectly 1/4″, even on the curves.
