Calico – Cut Out Edge Table Runner

Hello, friends, it’s Julia from Bayhill Studio. I was thrilled to be able to play with fabric from Lori Holt’s new Calico collection, and today I get to share my project with you!

You know I absolutely love fabric panels and cheater cloth, so when I saw the Grandmother’s Calico Flower Garden print from the Calico collection designed by Lori Holt, I knew I had to make something with it.

I decided I wanted to make a whole cloth baby quilt, but with that in mind, I don’t know what I was thinking when I only got myself one yard cuts. The fabric used for the back of the quilt (middle deep purple fabric) should always be a few inches larger on all sides than the quilt top fabric. I decided to give it a go anyways and just see what would happen.

Quilting this fabric was an absolute pleasure. I free motion quilted around the edges of each flower, and then created lines where authentic hexagons would meet. This created the illusion of real hexies. Isn’t it cute?!

My concerns about fabric size were realized, and I didn’t have enough for a baby quilt — especially after cutting out the flower shapes around the edges, so instead I cut out two table runners. Perfect!

I LOVE the cut out edge, and while it was tricky to machine bind so many angles in such short segments, It actually turned out lovely!

The tonal purple backing and binding are a nice contrast to the multi colored top fabric, giving the eye a place to rest.

Here’s a closer look at some of the designs on this flower garden fabric. Everything is super tiny and super adorable!

I created a video, which you can watch here, documenting the process of making these table runners. It is part tutorial and part “watch me learn a new technique.”

Timeless, cheery, and perfectly homespun, this table runner brightens up the room and would make a fabulous homemade gift!
