Expressions Batiks – Grandmother’s Groovy Garden Quilt

Hello, friends! It’s Julia from Bayhill Studio, and today and have a fun and seriously groovy quilt to share with you featuring fabric from the Batiks collection.

I designed this quilt around a photo from an old quilting book from the 1970’s. I love the giant, bold flowers, and I just knew I had to make another on using Batik fabrics from Riley Blake Designs.

I LOVE the texture and depth Batiks offer. I wanted a really retro, groovy aesthetic, so I opted for a color palette of yellows, greens, orange, brown, and blues. I cut all of these flowers using my Grandmother’s Groovy Garden Flower Template available in my shop (click the button below). Here they are all cut and ready to sew. Aren’t they gorgeous?!

The quilt doesn’t have a specific pattern. Simply layer the flowers over the quilt back and batting 2-3 rows at a time and appliqué them directly to the two back layers.

For detailed instructions, you can watch my video on YouTube where I walk you through the process.

The quilt can be made any size. I cut out as many flowers as I could with the fabric I had, and that determined the size of my quilt. I just kept layering and sewing until I ran out. I ended up with a quilt measuring approximately 65″ x 65″.

No need to quilt this – the appliqué is the quilting. I love how the contrasting zig zag stitching frames each flower, helping each flower, and each fabric pop.

I opted for a scrappy binding, using the little bits of fabric I had left over. I wasn’t sure how a busy binding would look with such a busy quilt, but I absolutely love how it turned out!

I hope you enjoyed looking at this project as much as I loved making it! Be sure to follow me on Instagram and subscribe to my YouTube Channel for more project ideas and inspiration. Have a blessed day!
