Gingham Fields – Rolie Polie Pillow

Gingham Fields is a brand new collection by My Mind’s Eye and we have to say, we are smitten with these greens! My Mind’s Eye always has gorgeous floral collections and Gingham Fields is no exception.

Today’s project is a fabulous little pillow using strips from a Rolie Polie. After cleaning out an upstairs closet last weekend I found a cute little 14 x 20 pillow form that wasn’t being used. I knew Gingham Fields would be so cute on a little quilted pillow.

I went about the project with no real plan and wanted to give it a scrappy, yet coordinated look.

Let me walk you through the design process and be sure to check out this REEL on Instagram to see these blocks come to life!

  1. Choose 4 Rolie Polie strips and cut them down to 8″ (giving you two 8″ strips of each print)
  2. Arrange the strips in rows and sew together with a scant 1/4″ seam allowance, making two blocks
  3. Layout the blocks right sides together, with the rows facing different directions, and sew all along the edge with a scant 1/4″.
  4. Bring the cutting table and cut from point to point on the diagonals
  5. Separate your blocks, press, and square up

That is how I made my center blocks! I like that it is a quick and fun way to get unique looking blocks.

After I had my center blocks I brought my pillow form over and started doing some improve design.

The size and shape of my pillow lent itself best to using just 3 of my center squares. I used Riley White for my background. I decided to cut 1 1/2″ strips of Riley White to border my main three blocks.

After I added the borders on all sides and the top and bottom to make the center unit, I selected more prints from my Rolie Polie to strip piece. When I had all the strips together I cut it in half and put one until on the top and the other on the bottom. I flipped one of the pieces so that the prints didn’t mirror each other.

I squared up the whole unit, added another Rolie Polie strip to each of my sides to get it to be the right size for my pillow form and boom! Done. This was such a fun project and great time to experiment and sew without a pattern.

I did a wavy, free motion machine quilting and added a simple envelope closure for the back. I love how it turned out!
