Hello! It’s Amanda, aka Jedi Craft Girl, hanging out with Penny Rose Fabrics today! I’m happy to share this delicious little quilt called Strawberry Jam. Living in Southern California, it’s strawberry season all year round! This quilt reminds me of fun times spent in the kitchen making popovers, biscuits, rolls, and anything else we could bake to hold our fresh strawberry jam on! YUMMY!! The Shabby Strawberry fabric line is brand new from Penny Rose. Let’s get started!

First make sure you have some hot buttermilk biscuits and fresh strawberry jam to keep you going while you make the quilt 🙂

Cut on both diagonals giving you (4) HSTs

Press toward the dark side (heehee) and square each HST up to measure 2.5″. To square up, align the diagonal seam with the 45 degree angle mark on your cutting mat. Measure 2.5″ and cut, do this on each side. I like the little mats that spin around so you don’t have to move the block. This method will yeild (4) HST per 4.5″ square. Cut (20) 2.5″ squares out of the solid white. You can lay out the block now.

I had fun taking a few minutes and rearranging the squares to come up with different patterns. HSTs are the best!! You can totally play around with them and come up with your own design!

I decided to stick with my initial idea, but I love the star block too!strawberry-jam-quilt.-2-1024x768

Make sure your cat sits on the block so it doesn’t go anywhere 🙂

Sew the color points together like you would a 4-Patch. Press seams. Once it looks like this, continue sewing together again like a 4-Patch. Press. Jar Block

To make the jar background block, cut (4) white squares 6.5″ x 6.5″. Cut border strips from the mint floral print (2) 1.5″ x 6.5″ and (2) 1.5″ x 8.5″ per each of the blocks. Sew the strips to each side, press, then sew the strips to the top and bottom, press.

I used my Sizzix Fabi machine to die cut the jam jar. This die is called Jar #2 by Lori Whitlock. It’s the cutest!

Iron the Heat n Bond Lite to the back of the strawberry fabric. Then run it through the Sizzix machine with the jar die. Peel off the backing and heat set it into place. I did the same thing with the jar lid, it’s part of the die. If you don’t have a Sizzix machine, this is a simple shape that would be easy to draw. You would just draw the shape to the Heat n Bond Lite and then cut it with scissors instead of the Sizzix.

Stitch around the jar and lid with gray thread.

Now that all the blocks are finished, lay them. Sew them together like you would a giant 9-Patch block. Press Add the borders Cut (4) strips 3″ x WOF of solid white. I didn’t measure the length of the borders. Sew the white border strips to the sides, press and trim off excess. Sew the other white border strips to the top and the bottom, press, and trim off the excess. It’s ready to quilt!!
