I’m Julia from Bayhill Studio, and I’m super excited to share my Patchwork and Pinwheels Quilt with you today!

This quilt is part fabric panel, part whirling pinwheel blocks, and part scrappy patchwork.

The fabrics for this quilt come from the brand new Red White & Bang! collection designed by Sandy Gervais. I fell in love with all of the small scale prints — the flags, sailboats, watermelon slices, paisley, plaid and more. The fabric panel features a retro blue truck with flowers, a picnic basket, and, of course, fireworks. So fun!

Fourth of July and pinwheels go hand in hand, so I knew I wanted to add pinwheel blocks to my quilt. I could have chosen to make the easy half square triangle pinwheel blocks, but I wanted something that had a more vintage vibe to it, and that’s when I found the old fashioned whirling pinwheel block. These are so cute!

The construction of this quilt is pretty simple. The only challenge to this is creating the whirling pinwheel blocks. These blocks have such a fun, vintage look to them, but they do require specific templates and skill to assemble. You will need to be comfortable with sewing curves, and with appliqué.

Once the blocks are assembled, you are home free, as the rest of the quilt is made up of scrappy strips sewn together to create a fun, vintage patchwork vibe. You can visit my BLOG for a basic explanation of how I put it all together.

For the quilting, I decided to echo the shape of the flower petals throughout the entire quilt.
I created a super quick video walking you through how this petal design is done. It is SUPER easy, very forgiving, and beginner friendly!
