Hi, it’s Damjana from AppleGreen Cottage, sewing with the Sew Much Fun collection by Echo Park Paper. I hope your summer was good! We have been around a lot, and now as the seasons change, I am so excited to spend more time in my sewing room again. Which is always a great excuse to make it prettier, right? This time, I decided my sewing machine needed a mat to rest on – and that a pretty one!
So I made a simple sewing machine mat for my Janome. One to catch any tiny threads, bits and pieces, and it can also double as a quick sewing machine cover.
These are the prints I used from the Sew Much Fun collection by Echo Park Paper, featuring vintage thread spools, scissors, and sewing machines. It is wonderful to decorate your home with. Did you catch those adorable vintage sewing machines!
I love the new sewing machine mat. Who’d think this is just a single quilt-as-you-go panel! Always such a calming, rewarding thing to quilt as you go. It’s pretty easy but if you are not familiar with the qayg technique, check out my quilt-as-you-go tutorial at AppleGreen Cottage, it also has a video:
Since I want it to catch those tiny thread bits that get floating around my sewing table when I sew, I did not opt for binding, so nothing gets caught behind the folded binding edges. (Less cleaning!)
How to finish the edges so no binding is necessary?
Would you want to make the same no-binding edges? It’s easy! See this mug rug tutorial at Applegreen Cottage, same log cabin design and same finished edges. And so quick, too!
To increase the size, simply double the cutting dimensions from the tutorial – and feel free to add an extra inch here and there, on outer edges. This machine mat turned out the perfect size for me: 23″ by 17″.
You can use this quilt as you go mug rug tutorial to sew a sewing machine mat, a placemat, a table runner, or a coaster – all without any binding necessary!
And when you have finished sewing, just dust the mat off and hang it over the machine – it turns into an instant machine cover, yay!
Head over to your favorite quilt shop and ask for the new Sew Much Fun collection – I’m sure you’ll have so much fun creating with these beautiful prints.
