If you’ve heard of Liberty Fabrics, you are probably familiar with their gorgeous Tana Lawn, but did you know they also make a fabulous quilting cotton? Riley Blake is proud to be the exclusive U.S. Distributor for Liberty Cotton — medium weight quilting cotton with the same high quality you know and expect from Liberty Fabrics.

The color range in this collection varies from deep, traditional hues, all the way to soft, airy pastels. The prints play beautifully together in the time-tested, eclectic combination that only Liberty can achieve.

The rich, saturated colors in the Summer House collection were demanding to be made into a bag, and since we are completely smitten with the REDWOOD TOTE, I decided to make not one, but TWO!

The bag exteriors are made with the red Victoria Floral and the Red Conservatory Fruit prints.

The all over pattern of the Red Conservatory Fruits are a good choice for a bag exterior because you don’t have to worry about the design aligning at the seams. The deep color won’t show wear and tear as quickly as a lighter color would, and the medium scale of the print is interesting without being too busy.

The pockets and bag lining are a great place to use lighter prints that balance out the darker exterior design. I used the Yellow Hampton Vines print for the exterior pocket lining.

For the bag lining, I used Yellow Hidcote Berry fabric. LOVE those sweet little splashes of yellow!

For the second bag exterior, I chose Red Victoria Floral. Such a gorgeous, traditional pattern that goes with anything — you can’t go wrong with this!

The lining needed a contrast in scale and color, so I opted for the Charcoal Oxford Fern print. Isn’t it beautiful?

I love using leather or even faux leather handles on my bags. They give them a very finished, durable appearance and they look anything but homemade!

I do recommend using a good quality metal zipper – preferably a color that coordinates or contrasts nicely with the bag exterior. The contrasting blue zippers here add another lovely punch of color, and give the bags a very custom look.
