Hello, friends, it’s Julia from Bayhill Studio. I’m so excited today to be introducing a brand new quilt pattern I’m calling Winter Night. Inspired by dark, starry, magical winter nights, this pattern features nine giant stars set against a dreamy dark backdrop.
I absolutely love traditional quilt designs, and I love the challenge of turning those traditional designs into something bold and modern, and a bit unexpected.
Winter Night captures traditional elements we know and love, and blows them up into giant, oversized blocks that are brimming with positive energy.
I designed this quilt pattern around the adorable little Santa squares found on the fabric panel in the Twas collection designed by the lovely and talented Jill Howarth. They are seriously so cute, and I knew I wanted to make them the superstar of a new quilt design. Seriously, can you blame me? They are totally irrististable!
Now the Santa squares are enjoying their new home, front and center – literally the center – of these giant stars that appear to be shining in the night sky.
I really wanted to get some closeup photos so you can get a look at these seriously adorable fabrics. You’ll find a tiny mouse, tiny stockings, a tiny winter village, tiny santas, trees, candy canes, sparkly tinsel….it’s cuteness overload!
I didn’t follow an exact plan when assembling the stars in this quilt. My only goal was to contrast color and scale, and to not have two of the same print next to each other. I wanted it to have a random look for a truly scrappy feel. I quilted this on my home machine using a simple meandering design. I love using this design because it doesn’t create pull on the fabrics, allowing the stars to keep their shape and structure.
If you want to create a lap quilt or baby/toddler sized quilt, simply reduce the number of blocks to four. Or you could make just one block, add a small border, and turn it into a European size decorative pillow. So many options!
