Hi there! My name is Anorina and I blog over at Samelia’s Mum. I’m an Aussie mum, who loves to sew and design projects. You’ll often see me hanging around Instagram (@SameliasMum) – sharing little teasers of new projects. Today, I’m introducing my Vintage Petal Table Runner project. I really hope you like it!
If you saw my Teardrop Trivet post (and free pattern) yesterday, you’ll know that I’ve been playing with Vintage Kitchen by Andrea Mueller for Riley Blake Designs. Oh my goodness, this range is such fun!
The Vintage Petal Table Runner is a great project to showcase some of your favourite prints. The applique pieces are large and simple enough for a beginner to tackle. A more advanced sewist can finish the Vintage Petal Table Runner in a couple of hours which also makes this perfect as a last minute gift. DOWNLOAD and PRINT the full pattern sheet here.
Requirements:
Bonding paper (eg Vliesofix or Heat n Bond etc)
(4) 7″ of yellow feature fabric for the petal applique
(4) 7″ of red feature fabric for the petal applique
(4) 7″ of brown feature fabric for the petal applique
(2) 16″ square light blue solid fabric
(1) 16″ square white solid fabric
1/2 yd teal main print(border 2)
1/4 yd teal drop print (border 1 + binding)
(1) 30″ x 60″ (approx) piece of batting
2yd backing fabric
Cotton thread to match the applique fabric – I used Aurifil 50wt
Cotton thread in a neutral color for the quilting
Iron, board, sewing machine, general sewing supplies
1. Begin by printing out the template and tracing the petal shape on to the paper side of the bonding paper x 12. Roughly cut these shapes approximately 1/4″ outside of the drawn line.
2. With the glue side down, press (4) petal shapes to the back of each of the (3) feature fabrics. Once cool, cut these shapes out, directly on the drawn line and remove the backing papers
3. Fold the background fabric squares, both vertically and horizontally and finger press slightly. This slight crease will be a good guide to centre the petal shapes.
4. Position the petal shapes (one in each quarter, close to the centre creases). Leave approximately a 1/2″ gap between the shapes. Fuse the petals in place.
5. Using the matching thread on your machine, applique these shapes in place. I used a straight stitch, but a zig zag or blanket or any other fancy stitch is fine too.
6. Sew the squares into a row – blue, white, blue. Press and trim if necessary.
Cutting (borders) ** Long strips need to be pieced **
Drops Fabric
Cut (2) 1″ x 17″ strips (A)
Cut (2) 1″ x 47″ strips (B)
Cut (4) 1 3/4″ x WOF. Sew these end to end for the binding
Main Fabric
Cut (2) 3″ x 22 1/2″ (C)
Cut (2) 3″ x 48″ (D)
Borders
1. Sew (A) border strips to the long sides of the table runner. Press.
2. Sew the (B) border strips the short sides of the table runner. Press.
3. Sew the (C) border strips to the long sides of the table runner. Press.
4. Sew the (D) border strips to the short sides of the table runner. Press.
Quilting
1. Sandwich the backing, batting and top. Baste with your preferred method.
2. Quilt as desired. I echo quilted around the petal shapes and straight lines 1/4″ along each seam. Trim and square the table runner.
3. Attach the single fold binding as you would a quilt.
