It’s Lauren here from Molly and Mama and I’m thrilled to be kicking off 2023 with such a pretty new project from this beautiful fabric range. Introducing the latest collection from Gracey Larson of Burlap and Blossom Patterns; Wild and Free. Gracey has combined the USA state flowers to create a gorgeous bouquet of florals. She’s included these wild flowers and other natural elements in her collection, including fireflies, clouds and birds.
I was immediately drawn to Wild and Free because of the dainty florals and also for the warm and playful color palette. Being Australian, I didn’t use the main print which includes the names of the States and the corresponding flowers (although it is absolutely stunning!). But I was sure to select a variety of the other prints and patterns. They’re all gorgeous and work so well together. I love the way the mustard prints just pop!
I knew that I wanted to showcase all of these prints so decided to sew another version of my Sweet Stitches Sampler Pattern. I’ve called this project a sampler because it’s a wonderful introduction to so many sewing techniques and it’s perfect for beginners looking to learn new skills.
The flowers are created using the raw edge appliqué technique. And in the centre of each flower is a fabric yoyo or Suffolk puff. You can learn my appliqué method and how I make yoyos over on the Molly and Mama blog.
The corner blocks are English paper pieced hexagon flowers. For an EPP introduction, I also have a handy tutorial on my website.
The centre block also includes appliqué, but this time using 100% wool felt. The hand embroidered details, hand quilting and blanket stitch edging complete the project. I love that this pattern combines all of these techniques into one easy to follow booklet of instructions. And I also love that you can transfer all of these skills to future projects too.
I originally designed this pattern for the Enchanted Meadow Collection. It looks very different here in soft blues and reds. So I can’t choose a favorite! You can read all about it HERE.
Here’s a view of the entire Wild and Free Collection below. What would you sew with it?
Happy stitching, Lauren.
