Hey y’all! I’m Hilary of By Hilary Jordan! You can find me on Instagram at @byhilaryjordan as well as on my website HERE. I am thrilled to be on the Riley Blake Blog to share my my first garment sewing finish of 2022! Can you believe I started garment sewing nearly two decades ago? These days I mainly quilt, but it’s nice to whip up a garment every now and then.
This darling Daybreak fabric by Fran Gulick of Cotton and Joy arrived during the dreary Houston, TX winter, and it immediately had me dreaming of warmer days. Thankfully, Spring comes early in Texas and we’re already having glorious sunny days early in March. 🌞
I used the Daybreak Bees in the Mist colorway to stitch up a Closet Core Patterns Kalle Shirt in the crop length. The Bees print is great for garment sewing because it’s not an obviously directional fabric. This meant I didn’t need to worry too much about cutting the print upside-down (because that has definitely happened to me before).
Sewing a garment with quilting cotton is one of my favorites because of how user friendly it can be. They are a stable fabric that doesn’t stretch too much, which means they are great for beginning garment sewists! If you’ve never tackled garment sewing before, I highly suggest making something with quilting cottons. Just go slow and enjoy the process.
Sewing in 3D, as my good friend calls it, is a fun challenge for us quilters!
Oh and definitely pre-wash your fabric. I know to pre-wash or not to pre-wash is a divisive topic in the quilty world, but it’s a must for garment sewing. No one wants to make a garment, only to have it shrink after washing.
Thank y’all for joining me, and my photo taking helper Cooper ❤🐶! I hope I’ve inspired you try your hand at garment sewing, and feel free to shoot me a DM on Instagram with any garment sewing questions.
You can find Daybreak fabrics in your local quilt shops soon! It’s the perfect collection for all your Springtime sewing & quilting needs!
