Honey Bee – Classic 16 Patch Quilt with a Twist

Hey y’all! It’s Hilary of By Hilary Jordan back again to share another bee-utiful project. 🐝 Today’s project is made with the beautiful new Honey Bee collection by My Mind’s Eye. The limited color palette of yellow, cream, and black is simple yet refined.

One of the things I love when making quilts is working with pre-cuts. Having a little bit of each fabric in an entire collection is so satisfying. When I was designing this pattern I knew it would be perfect for the Rolie Polie pre-cut.

This quilt is my take on a classic 16 patch quilt. I strip pieced the blocks and then arranged them in a slightly chaotic manner to give it a modern twist.

Of course when I need a bright sunny day it’s overcast and rainy. 😅

I kept the quilting simple with a crosshatch grid through the print sections of the blocks. I used my favorite bright yellow Aurifil #2130, it is a perfect match for all the yellows in the collection. Plus it is a fun pop of color on the black and white prints.

I ended up making this quilt bigger than planned, go big or go home right? But, that meant my backing fabric was too small. Thankfully I had an old flat sheet hanging around in the linen closet and it worked perfectly as an emergency backing. My Granny would be proud because that’s how she backed all of her quilts.

I find it a bit funny that my past two Riley Blake projects feature fabrics with bees because as a kid I was terrified of them. 😂🐝 Bee sure to visit my BLOG for more photos and details, plus follow me on Instagram @byhilaryjordan for more project ideas and inspiration!
