TBT Modern: Milky Way

Love this quilt block! When Bonnie told me she was doing a ‘Milky Way’ quilt block, I had no idea what to expect, but in my mind, I saw stars shining in the night sky.

I was thrilled to find that the Milky Way block was a simple variation of the ‘Friendship Star’ block. Stars!!! Of course, I had to go with a bright yellow star with basic black and white 4-patch blocks in the corners. Bright star/night sky.

Now that I am becoming comfortable with basic quilting techniques and terms, I have found myself becoming particular about making sure corners, angles and edges line up perfectly. When I am off by the littlest bit, I get frustrated. So, if you are a newbie like me, I am here to tell you and myself: “Stop it!”

Let’s not let little imperfections stop us from enjoying this very fulfilling art form. Instead of seeing imperfections, let’s call it ‘character’ and ‘charm.’ Yes, it’s nice to have things line up just right, and I’ll always do a happy dance when it happens, but quilts are expressions of ourselves and our love, both of which are imperfect at best. Right?

I’ll always admire the quilters who have the time and have developed the real talent to create works of fabric art worthy of acclaim. If you aren’t that advanced, no worries! Have fun & express yourself! Don’t mind the imperfections and just enjoy the learning process.
